ABN-262 features Intel® Intrusion Prevention and Intrusion Detection server controller

Portwell, a world-leading innovator and supplier of Network Security Appliances, a member of the Intel® Embedded Alliance, announces ABN-262, a PCI-E dual copper Gigabit Ethernet adapter with bypass function. Based on the Intel® 82574L Gigabit Ethernet controller, ABN-262 features low power connectivity with advanced performance in a footprint as small as 147.3 (W) x 68.9 (L) mm / 5.8" (W) x 2.71" (L).

ABN-262 unit includes a built-in watchdog timer (WDT) - with an easy-configurable Normal/Bypass mode - that incorporates a software programmable time-out setting and a control to automatically switch to bypass/non-bypass functions for Ethernet ports in the event of a host system “hang” and/or power failure. Built with onboard LED and LED pin-out for LAN status and bypass mode and variable LED location for system integration, ABN-262 supports most network operating systems and its low profile form factor will fit in a wide variety of systems platforms. The new ABN-262 is the ideal solution for customers seeking applications for increased throughput and High Availability (HA) on server-based systems, Intrusion Prevention Servers (IPS), Intrusion Detection Servers (IDS), WAN optimization, security appliances and other mission critical gateways.

Detection and protection

“Cyber attacks on enterprises cost businesses worldwide an estimated $100 billion annually,” says Paddy Hsu, product manager of Portwell Inc., “and it’s not getting any better. As a result, enterprises are taking a more proactive approach. They are turning to critical path devices like the ABN-262 to detect and protect because it addresses key concerns such as the ability to fail safely.”

According to Paddy, the ABN-262 is able to ease customers’ concerns because it incorporates Intel’s tried and tested 82574L Gigabit Ethernet Controller. “The ABN-262’s dual ports feature increases network reliability by providing the ability to bypass its Ethernet ports on a host system failure or power off,” Paddy explains. “This bypass mode function enables the device to bypass a failed system and provides maximum uptime for the network. It can be configured to a fail-open or fail-close mode. The low profile design enables higher bandwidth and throughput from standard and low profile PCI-E slots and servers. ABN-262 provides support for most of today’s networking operating systems,” he adds, “which means that it can be widely deployed throughout the network security community.”

Reduced downtime and increased continuity

According to Polo Huang, Sales VP of Portwell, Inc., the main focus of the new ABN-262 is to reduce network downtime caused by security appliance hardware failure, which then automatically increases the continuity of the business network. “It’s a win-win situation for customers’ who have been plagued by worms, viruses, Trojan Horses and the like,” says Polo. “With the ABN-262, we have designed a standard low profile PCI-E x4 adapter that is easy to integrate into a 1U/2U or 4U server. Our close ties with Intel® mean that we were able to utilize its 82574L controller as the engine for our ABN-262 adapter. This offers our customers not just detection and protection,” Polo confirms, “but also peace of mind.”
