Strengthening Military Defense and Electronic Warfare Communications with Edge AI: Overcoming Harsh Environment Challenges through Technological Advancements

Industry: Defense and Aerospace

Modern battlefield operations rely heavily on military radar, defense systems, and electronic warfare (EW) communication systems, which are vital for early threat detection, real-time response, active protection, and tactical decision-making. For example, artillery radar systems can quickly detect incoming projectiles to perform counter-artillery actions, while Active Protection Systems (APS) must instantly identify and intercept incoming missiles and projectiles. These applications demand ultra-high performance in data processing speed, target recognition accuracy, real-time communications, and system stability due to the fast, unpredictable, and numerous nature of incoming threats.

However, military platforms are constantly under pressure for system upgrades. Existing architectures often lack flexibility, making every upgrade costly and time-consuming. Legacy designs hinder modularity and make it difficult to integrate new technologies, resulting in inefficiencies and poor maintainability. Deployed in harsh environments such as high altitudes, extreme temperature shifts, dust, and salt fog systems must also withstand vibration, shock, and electromagnetic interference. These requirements become even more critical as multi-sensor and multi-task collaborations become the norm on today’s battlefield.

Portwell’s COM-HPC Module Powers Strategic Computing Platforms: PCOM-B800GT Accelerates Military Embedded Upgrades

The adoption of COM Express and next-generation COM-HPC modular architecture has become key to military equipment upgrades. These modular solutions provide high integration and flexibility, enabling rapid deployment across mission computers, radar processing units, and command-control platforms. This drastically reduces system upgrade and maintenance time while improving module replaceability and cost-efficiency.

Sensor data from front-line systems such as artillery radar, SAR/GMTI radar, and EO sensor is transmitted via interfaces like PCIe, USB, and Ethernet to embedded mission computers. These data sets include radar echoes, imagery, and communication signals, forming the basis for further processing. The mission computer, powered by the PCOM-B800GT module, features high-performance Intel® Xeon CPUs and AI acceleration instructions (e.g., AVX-512, VNNI), offering optimized parallel computing for AI workloads. This significantly enhances radar signal processing, target recognition, image tracking, and signal decoding enabling real-time tracking of multiple high-speed targets.

Processed data is sent back to the command-and-control system via high-speed interfaces like 10G Ethernet and PCIe Gen4/Gen5. The PCOM-B800GT is equipped with eight 10G KR ports, ensuring fast, high-volume data transmission and minimizing latency and communication bottlenecks, achieving real-time data sharing and collaborative operations. Designed for extreme environments and high-security communication scenarios, the PCOM-B800GT supports Intel® Quick Assist Technology (QAT) to provide up to 100G of hardware acceleration for encryption, decryption, and compression. This improves cybersecurity, mitigates electronic interference and network threats, and ensures the integrity and confidentiality of military communications.

In addition, its fanless rugged design operates across a wide temperature range (-40°C to 85°C), tolerating shock and vibration while maintaining system reliability. This ensures continuous operation in the field, reducing the risk of mission failure due to environmental conditions.

Portwell offers a full range of COM Express, COM-HPC, and COM-HPC Client modules from cost-effective to high-performance, high-speed I/O configurations. All products support wide-temperature designs for harsh environments and include a variety of I/O options and security features. These highly integrated and reliable modules help customers quickly deploy military embedded solutions, boosting both performance and system stability.
